Oct. 12, 2006
EUGENE, Ore. - Led by the 16 kills of Sonja Newcombe, the Oregon Ducks defeated the Arizona State Sun Devil Volleyball team 3-1 Thursday night at McArthur Court. The Devils were led by the 15 kills of Nicole Morton and the 31 digs of Sydney Donahue. The loss drops ASU to 9-8 on the year, 1-5 in the Pac-10.
The Ducks took a hotly contested game one, winning 30-22 despite five ties and twice having to come back to re-take the lead from ASU. The Devils answered right back in game two, fighting off Oregon to win 30-25. Game three was more of the same, as both squads went back and forth trying to earn the advantage. The Ducks fought through six tie scores and five lead changes to claim the game 30-28 to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Sun Devils hurt themselves in game four, committing 12 attack errors while hitting only .077. On the flipside, the Ducks made only five attack errors while hitting .208 to take the game 30-24 and the match 3-1.
Margie Giordano had 13 kills and Nina Reeves added 12 of her own in the losing effort. Giordano recorded a double-double as she also contributed 21 digs. The undoing for the Devils was the play at the net by the Ducks. Oregon recorded 23 total team blocks to the Devils ten.
Arizona State will now head to Corvallis to take on the Beavers Friday night at Gill Coliseum. The match gets underway at 7 pm.
