Men's Swimming Defeats Pacific in Opening Meet

STOCKTON, Calif. - The California men's swimming team opened its 2006-07 season with a bang on Friday, defeating Pacific 143-108 in Stockton, Calif. The meet was held at Chris Kjeldsen Pool.
Junior Jernej Godec won the 100 freestyle after he was clocked at 45.66. Freshman Nathan Adrian opened his Cal career with his first place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:38.94). Sophomore Ryan Emanuel finished behind Adrian in second with his time of 1:39.76.
In the distance freestyle events, junior Michael Jafari finished second in the 500 freestyle (4:46.01), behind Pacific's Stephen Quinn (4:43.40). Freshman B.J. Scoggan finished the race fifth (4:56.89) also.
Another freshman started his career off with a win. In the 1000 freestyle Adrian Casey won the event with his final time of 9:33.67. Jafari finished second at 9:38.95.
In the 100 breaststroke two freshman claimed the top two spots. Richard Hunter won the race with his time of 56.57. Troy Nissen was clocked at 59.53 to place second. Also Cal's freshman Brook Haller finished third (2:12.48) in the 200 breaststroke.
Junior Dominic Cathey claimed first in the 100 butterfly with his time of 50.00. Cathey finished second in the 200 after being clocked at 1:54.77. Sophomore Ian Lentz won the event with his time of 1:54.46.
In the 200 IM, Casey finished second at 1:57.26.
Cal finished one-two in the 200 medley relay. Cal's `A' team of Russell, Hunter, Godec and Copeland won the event with their final time of 1:29.91. Freshmen Guy Barnea, Matthew Benoit, Adrian and senior Patrick O'Neil claimed second (1:32.37).
In the 200 freestyle relay, Cal's team of Copeland, O'Neil, Cathey and freshman Kenny Bower finished first at 1:24.51.
The Bears will return to the pool for its annual Alumni Meet on Friday, Oct. 27, at 3:30 p.m. (PST). Then hit the pool the next day, Saturday, Oct. 28, at 8 a.m. (PST) for a meet against Cal State Bakersfield.
