Cardinal Women First, Men Second At Pre-NCAA Invite

Terre Haute, Ind. - The highly-ranked Stanford men's and women's cross country teams enjoyed a successful outing at the Pre-NCAA Invitational, previewing the championship courses to come in November. Eighty-seven women's teams and 86 men's teams competed at the invitational, split into two races based upon national rankings. The top-ranked women's squad captured the Blue Race with a low score of 45 points, followed by Minnesota with 200 points and conference competitor Arizona State in third with 224. The third-ranked men's squad finished second in the White Race with 106 points, just behind Iona with 100 points. Florida was third in the White Race with 217 points. In the women's White Race, North Carolina State finished first with 117 points, followed by Michigan in second with 176. In the men's Blue Race, Colorado claimed the team win with 75 points, while Florida State was second with 141 points.

Redshirt-junior Arianna Lambie led the Cardinal charge in the Blue Race, finishing second in 20:20, just behind Wake Forest's Michelle Sikes in 20:16. BYU's Kassi Andersen finished third (20:22), while Stanford's Teresa McWalter's (20:24) and Amanda Trotter (20:27) rounded out the top five. Senior Katy Trotter finished eighth in 20:32 and redshirt-sophomore Lindsay Flacks was the Cardinal's final scorer in 26th with a time of 20:49. Sophomore Alicia Follmar followed closely in 20:52 for 31st, and redshirt-sophomore Katie Harrington was 55th in 21:12.

Redshirt-junior Neftalem Araia finished fourth in the men's White Race to lead the Cardinal to a runner-up team performance, covering the 8,000 meter course in 23:30. Liberty's Josh McDougal captured the White Race in 23:14, while Northern Arizona's Joseph Lomong was second in 23:18. Junior? Garrett Heath (24:00) and Brett Gotcher (24:02) were 18th and 19th, respectively, followed closely by sophomore Hari Mix in 28th with a time of 24:09. Senior Jacob Gomez was Stanford's final scorer in 51st, logging a time of 24:17. Fellow senior Jonathan Pierce (24:30) and redshirt-junior Russell Brown (24:32) were also 51st and 59th for the Cardinal.

Six additional Cardinal runners competed in the men's and women's open races. Freshman Kate Niehaus captured the women's 6,000 meter Open Race in 21:14, followed by junior Lauren Centrowitz in third (21:19). Senior Lindsay Allen was also 104th in a time of 22:55. In the men's 8,000 meter Open Race, Redshirt-sophomore Hakon DeVries (24:27) and sophomore John McGuire (24:40) were second and third, respectively, behind Norfolk State's David Kemboi in 24:07. Freshman Steven Duplinsky was also sixth in 24:50.

Stanford will take next week off before hosting the Pac-10 Championships on the Stanford Golf Course on October 28.
