No. 12 Cal Falls to Arizona State, 1-0
Oct. 15, 2006
BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 12 California lost to Arizona State, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium on a penalty kick just before halftime. The Golden Bears dropped to 7-3-4 (0-2-2 Pac-10) with its first home loss of 2006, while the Sun Devils improved to 6-6-2 (1-3).
'It was a pretty even game,' said Cal head coach Kevin Boyd. 'We're an inconsistent squad right now, and we're not bringing some of the intangibles that will bring you wins. We know it. At some point, we need to change things, and I'm waiting on our team. We're trying to give them ideas, but the team's got to do it.'
Cal was whistled for a foul just inside the top of its own penalty box with 10 seconds remaining in the opening half, and the Sun Devils' Kyleyn Felts converted the awarded penalty kick.
The Bears, who held an 11-7 shot advantage overall and a 7-3 edge in the second half, had several quality chances to tie the game in the second half.
In the 66th minute, freshman forward Lisa Kevorkian sent a shot off the cross bar, and Arizona State goalkeeper Kim Bingham snared the ball after it hit the ground. Exactly three minutes later, reserve freshman forward Katie Oakes fired a long shot off the cross bar.
Bingham saved all six of the Bears' shots on goal, including a difficult punch over the cross bar on a shot by junior forward Stephanie Wieger in the 25th minute of the game.
Cal went 0-1-1 on its homestand after playing tough defense with the exception of an own goal on Friday in a 1-1 tie against Arizona and a penalty kick today to Arizona State.
Cal embarks on its final regular-season road trip next weekend, as the Bears face Washington Oct. 20 and Washington State Oct. 22.
