UW Men Fall In Overtime At Cal, 3-2
Oct. 15, 2006
BERKELEY, CALIF. - Javier Ayala-Hill scored two goals, including the overtime gamewinner in the 97th minute, to lead California to a 3-2 victory over Washington in Pac-10 men's soccer action at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, Sunday afternoon.
The Huskies (9-5-0, 2-5-0 Pac-10) led twice in the match and the Golden Bears (10-3-1, 5-1-0 Pac-10) fought back both times. UW led 1-0 at halftime and again 2-1 midway through the second half until Cal scored two answered goals to post the comeback win. Midfielders Bobbak Talebi and George John accounted for the UW goals.
Talebi put the Huskies on the board with his first goal of the season at 39:26, an 18-yard shot that sailed inside the far post off a long pass served by Raphael Cox. The one-goal advantage stood until Ayala-Hill scored the first of his two goals at 64:37, a shot in the box that made it past UW keeper Rylan Hawkins.
It didn't take long for the Huskies to answer again, as John scored the go-ahead goal just over a minute later, a 12-yard shot assisted by Ely Allen, at 65:56. Cal's second equalizer came when Luke Sassano connected on a 16-yard shot at 79:25. The score stood at 2-2 at the end of regulation and almost seven minutes into the first overtime period, Ayala-Hill ended the match with a 10-yard shot past Hawkins.
'It was an extremely valiant effort by us,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'Cal was very determined and played strong. They wore us down a bit and we couldn't hang on there at the end. We couldn't answer the bell in overtime, so to speak, but I'm confident that we'll learn from this and come out stronger in future overtime games.'
Hawkins grabbed seven saves on Cal's 18 shots, while Golden Bear goalkeeper Justin Myers saved four of the Huskies' seven shots.
Washington ended up splitting its matches in the Bay Area this weekend, after defeating Stanford 2-0 on Friday night. UW will now return to Seattle to host big conference matches with San Diego State and UCLA, Friday and Sunday.
