QB U Project Eclipses $100,000 Endowment Level
Oct. 17, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - The selling of a print with the autographs of six Cougar quarterback legends that set numerous milestones while at Washington State University has reached a milestone in itself.
Created by long-time Cougar fan and supporter Mark Schuster, 'Quarterback U' is a print signed by six past Cougar quarterback greats: Jack Thompson, Mark Rypien, Timm Rosenbach, Drew Bledsoe, Ryan Leaf, and Jason Gesser. A limited number of prints went on sale July 21 as a fundraiser to establish an endowment at WSU. Every dollar from the $400 cost of the print goes toward the endowment.
As of Oct. 16, 246 prints have been sold for a total amount of $98,400. Factor in an additional $2,100, which was the amount the first print in the series was auctioned off for at the June 9 Tri-Cities Tailgate event, and the endowment has reached the six figure level of $100,500.
'We have been overwhelmed by the support for the Quarterback U project,' Schuster said. 'Prints have been sold to Coug fans across the country, from New York City to Pullman, and everywhere in between. The most rewarding part of the project is that not only do people get a historic piece of memorabilia, but they have impacted student-athletes for generations to come with their generous support of the Quarterback U project.'
'On behalf of the Athletic Department, I want to thank all of the people who have purchased a print and supported this project,' WSU Director of Athletics Jim Sterk said. 'I would also like to thank Mark for all of the time, effort, and commitment he has invested in this endeavor. Because of Mark's hard work, not only will he leave a legacy that will last forever at WSU, but he has touched the lives of our student-athletes for all time.'
The criteria for which the endowment, named the Schuster Family Endowment, will be directed are as follows: 1) a quarterback, 2) a football player from the Tri-Cities area, 3) as needed for the football team.
'As a friend of mine told me when the prints first went on sale, `The Cougs may not have as much money as some of the other schools in the Pac-10, but if we work harder, more efficiently, and with more creativity then they do, we will catch them,'' Schuster said. 'As we reach the $100k mark for the project, and have officially started the endowed scholarship, we believe this is a great example of that idea. I challenge all Cougs to think about how they can contribute their unique skills and ideas to the school we love.'
Although the endowment has reached the $100,000 plateau, it can still grow even larger. Individuals who have not yet purchased a print still have an opportunity to do so as fewer than 60 prints remain for sale.
