CONFERENCE LEADER AT THE MIDWAY POINT TO BE DETERMINED AT USC

No. 4 UCLA visits No. 5 USC with the victor securing at least a share of the Pac-10 lead at the midway point of the conference race... No. 3 STANFORD can push its way into a two-team team at the top of the standings by taking care of business at home with the Oregon schools... The Washington schools travel to Arizona where this week's FSN televised match takes place between WASHINGTON STATE an ARIZONA STATE... While there were some jockeying of order in this week's AVCA rankings, five teams still remain among the top eight with No. 3 Stanford, No. 4 UCLA, No. 5 USC, No. 6 WASHINGTON and No. 8 CALIFORNIA. The OREGON Ducks continue their assault on the rankings, picking up additional votes to reach No. 30 this week... Jim Watson will call the action for this week's FSN match at Arizona State, with Karch Kiraly and Holly McPeak providing color commentary.

PAC-10 VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK SONJA NEWCOMBE, OREGON

OREGON middle blocker Sonja Newcombe has been named the Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week for Oct. 9-15, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Newcombe, a freshman from Lake Arrowhead, Calif., led Oregon to a pair of victories over Arizona State and Arizona over the weekend, marking the Ducks' first two-match series sweep over Pac-10 opponents for the first time in 17 years.

On Friday, Newcombe collected 14 digs to tie her match-high against the Wildcats. In addition, she tallied 17 kills against one error in a three-set win over Arizona. Against the Sun Devils, Newcombe collected 15 digs to pass her previous match-high record, and went on to add 16 kills and eight blocks.

The weekend sweep not only snapped a 16-match losing streak to the Sun Devils and a 15-match losing streak against the Wildcats, but pushed Oregon over the .500 mark in Pac-10 play for the first time since 1989. The Ducks Conference record of 4-3 marks the most Conference wins since 1991.

This is the first weekly honor for Newcombe, and Oregon's 10th Pac-10 Player of the Week all-time. This is the second Duck to receive the honor since 1995, with the most recent being Lauren Westendorf, Sept. 7, 2004.

Also Nominated: Morgan Beck, SO,OH, CAL; Bryn Kehoe, SR, OH, STAN; Katie Carter, SR, OH, UCLA.

PAC-10 NOTES

  • ARIZONA - The Wildcats picked up their first conference win of the season with a three-game sweep at Oregon State. Junior MB Dominque Lamb hit .444 with 10 kills and eight blocks (four solo) in the victory. With 306 total blocks in her career, Lamb is just 18 blocks shy of cracking Arizona's career top ten list... The victory over Oregon State extended Arizona's win streak over the Beavers to 20... The `Cats have posted double-digit block totals in 13 of their last 14 matches and lead the league with 3.35 blocks per game.

  • ARIZONA STATE - After collecting 31 digs at Oregon and 27 digs at Oregon State, junior L Sydney Donahue has posted double digit digs in 29 straight matches. She needs 53 digs to reach 1,500 for her career. In doing so, she would become the 10th player in Pac-10 history, and third this season, to achieve that milestone.

  • CALIFORNIA - In their four-game loss at USC, the Bears established a season-high 21 team blocks (six solo, 30 assisted). With the exception of senior L Jillian Davis, each player recorded at least four blocks. Junior MH Ellen Orchard led the way with nine blocks to go with a .407 attack percentage (14 kills on 27 attempts with three errors)... Sophomore OH Morgan Beck hit .467 with a season-high 16 kills at UCLA. For the weekend, Beck tallied 27 kills on 53 attempts with just four errors (.434).

  • OREGON - The four conference wins this season betters the total number of Pac-10 wins for Oregon over the past five seasons. The last time the Ducks won four Pac-10 matches in a single year was back in 1991... The Ducks have won three consecutive Pac-10 matches for the first time since the 1989 season... The win over Arizona snapped a 15-match losing streak to the Wildcats. It was the first victory at home over Arizona since Oct. 17, 1992... Freshman MB Sonja Newcombe was impressive over the weekend as she led the team in kills in both matches and tallied a pair of double-doubles. She accumulated 33 kills (.4.71 kpg), hit .306, added 29 digs (4.14 dpg) and 10 blocks (1.43 dpg).

  • OREGON STATE - The Beavers have had 13 players see action in more than 50 percent of the games played this season... With 246 kills, OH Rachel Rourke is the first OSU freshman to record 200 kills since Gina Schmidt posted 226 during the 1998 season. Rourke is the 12th freshman in school history to record 200 kills... With 232 total blocks each, senior MB Abby Windell and senior OH/MB Brittany Cahoon are tied for 11th on the OSU career list.

  • STANFORD - Junior S Bryn Kehoe led the Cardinal to a pair of road victories over No. 4 USC and No. 5 UCLA. She guided the Cardinal offense to a .309 attack percentage vs. USC, and .300 at UCLA. Stanford has hit .300 or better in seven of the last eight matches... Kehoe tallied 117 assists (14.63 apg) over the weekend, and added nine kills in 18 attempts without an error... Senior OH Kristin Richards posted a double-double with 21 kills and 26 digs at UCLA... Coach John Dunning needs two victories to reach 600 career wins.

  • UCLA - Senior OH Katie Carter led the UCLA attack last weekend, recording team-high kills vs. California (12) and Stanford (19)... Junior OH Rachell Johnson matched a career-high with eight total blocks against California. She's second on the team in blocks, averaging 1.15 per game... The loss to Stanford snapped UCLA's win streak at 20.

  • USC - USC officially opened the Galen Center (10,258) last Thursday against No. 6 Stanford. Unfortunately, the Women of Troy came up short to the Cardinal. However, USC bounced back the next night with a victory over No. 7 California... Junior OPP/OH Asia Kaczor paced the attack, leading USC in kills in each match. She posted 39 kills (4.88 kpg) and hit .299 in the process... USC holds an 11-match winning streak (10 of those are in Pac-10 play) over this week's opponent UCLA. That's the longest winning streak by USC over the Bruins.

  • WASHINGTON - The Huskies swept Washington State in three games before a record crowd of 6,216 fans at Bank of America Arena. That attendance mark ranks third all-time in the Pac-10. The old Husky record of 5,712 fans was set vs. Stanford in 2004... Junior OH Christal Morrison led the Huskies with 18 kills and added 12 digs in the win over WSU. It was her sixth double-double of the season, with five of those occurring in the last six matches.

  • WASHINGTON STATE - The Cougars put up an impressive block against the Washington last week. Washington entered the match as the Pac-10 leader in hitting percentage (.317), but the Cougars posted 12 blocks (2 solo, 20 assisted) and held the Huskies to a .245 attack percentage. Junior MB Tara West posted six blocks and now ranks eighth in the Pac-10 with 1.28 blocks per game... With 370 digs, freshman L Kelly Hyder needs seven digs to move into 10th on WSU's single-season best list.
