TEMPE, Ariz.-- The sixth-ranked University of Washington volleyball team swept Arizona State in straight games Thursday night at Wells Fargo Arena. The win lifts Washington to 16-3 overall and 6-2 in the Pac-10, while the Sun Devils dip to 10-9 overall and 2-6 in the Pac-10. Game scores were 30-20, 30-25, 30-24.
The Huskies held statistical advantages in kills (63-43), aces (6-5) and digs (62-45), while the Sun Devils out-blocked Washington, 8.5-3.
Junior All-American Christal Morrison headlined Washington's attack with 18 kills, while adding 13 digs for her seventh double-double of the year. Sophomore Jill Collymore came off the bench to tally 17 kills, while Janine Sandell added 10 kills.
Senior All-American Courtney Thompson paced the Huskies to a .366 hitting percentage, while dishing 53 assists. She also led the team with 16 digs.
Washington jumped out to the 8-3 lead in game one after three kills apiece by Collymore and Sandell. The Huskies pushed their lead to 22-15 after four kills by Morrison and cruised to the 30-20 victory.
UW out-hit ASU .488-.343 in game one and was led by Collymore and Morrison with seven kills each.
The Sun Devils led throughout most of game two and took a four-point lead at 16-12. Washington battled back to even the score at 17-17 after two Morrison kills, a Stevie Mussie kill and Tamari Miyashiro service ace, and another Morrison kill gave the Huskies the 19-18 lead. Washington never trailed again, rolling to the 30-25 win.
Washington out-hit Arizona State .298-.182 in game two and was led by Morrison with six kills.
Game three was tied as late as 6-6 before the Huskies built a four-point lead at 15-11 after three consecutive kills by Mussie, Sandell and Morrison. The Sun Devils pulled to within one point at 20-19 but Washington rebuilt a four-point lead with kills by Alesha Deesing and Morrison and two ASU errors to go up 24-20. Morrison recorded an ace for match-point and a Collymore kill gave Washington the 30-24 victory.
UW out-hit ASU .326-.200 in game three and was led by Collymore with six aces.
Washington returns to action Friday night when they take on Arizona to complete the first half of the Pac-10 season. Game time is slated for 7 p.m.
