Oct. 19, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - Senior Brian Perry, junior Tanner Gardner, and sophomore Jared Boyer will captain the Stanford wrestling team this season announced Head Coach Kerry McCoy today. The trio was selected by their teammates to lead the Cardinal in 2006-07 competition.
'We have a great bunch of leaders,' said McCoy. 'These guys are some of our hardest workers and they truly represent our team well.'
Perry, a senior from Columbia, Mo., posted nine wins last season and will battle for the starting spot at 165 pounds. Perry was a Pac-10 place-winner in 2004, and will look to regain his place among the conference's best wrestlers.
Gardner, who also captained the team last year, earned All-America honors last season at 125 pounds, finishing eighth at the NCAA Championships in March. He recently was ranked fifth nationally at 125 pounds by W.I.N. Magazine, and will attempt to become Stanford's second two-time All-American in 2006-07.
Boyer, an Oklahoma City, Okla. native, started as a heavyweight for the Cardinal last season, and faced some of the toughest competition in the nation with five opponents ranked in the top-20. This season, he will move down to compete at 197 pounds.
The team will see its first action at wrestle-offs on October 28 at 2 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion. Competition begins Nov. 4 at the Avalon Duals in Edinboro, Pa.
