Al-Agba Moves Into ITA West Regional Singles Quarterfinals
Oct. 20, 2006
MALIBU, CALIF. - After the first two days of action at the ITA West Regional, the USC men's tennis team has gathered up a strong showing among the region's top players. With eight Trojan singles players starting out in the mix, four moved into Thursday's Round of 32, and two Trojans - third-seeded Jamil Al-Agba and Dejan Cvetkovic - powered their way into Friday's Round of 16. By day's end Al-Agba had punched his ticket into Saturday's quarterfinals when his UC Irvine opponent withdrew due to injury. Al-Agba is scheduled to face UCLA's Mathieu Dehaine at noon in the quarterfinals, just after Trojan duo Dejan Cvetkovic / Jason McNaughton do quarterfinal battle in doubles against a UCLA team of Dehaine and Drean.
Al-Agba's singles run began Thursday with a 6-0, 6-0 Round of 64 win over UCSB's Josh Finkelstein. That sweep helped spark Al-Agba to a 6-1, 6-1 win over San Diego's Matt Ozurich later that day, and carried over to Friday's Round of 16, although Al-Agba's match was cut short by Shimpei Suzuki's injury withdrawal.
After first-round losses, USC's Chong Wang, Gary Sacks, Jason McNaughton and Jarryd Cooper - who had worked his way into the main draw with four wins during Wednesday's qualifying competition - transitioned over into the Consolation Singles competition. There, Sacks and Cooper emerged victorious in the consolation Round of 32 to move into the Round of 16 on Friday morning. The two Trojans didn't stop there, either, motoring through the quarterfinals to set themselves up with Saturday semifinals. Cooper will face Phillips of ASU, and Sacks will play Sekiguchi of Arizona at noon.
On the doubles scene, USC sent three doubles teams in for battle. Each garnered a first-round bye, and then No. 4 seed Cvetkovic/McNaughton pumped out a pair of wins to earn a place in Saturday's quarterfinals. USC pair Sacks/Van't Hof tacked up a Round of 32 win, but then fell in a closely contested Round of 16 match, 9-8. Loucks/Snyder were edged out in the Round of 32 with a equally tight decision, falling 9-8 to UC Santa Barbara's Dalskov/Hui.
