Burduli, Spicer Advance To Third Round At ITA Northwest Regioanl

BERKELEY, Calif. - Ekaterina Burduli and Ashley Spicer each advanced to the third round with straight-set wins to highlight the first day of play at the 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Women's Northwest Regional Friday at the Hellman Tennis Center.
Burduli, a junior and the No. 7 seed, drew a bye in the first round then posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Pacific's Sasha Fisher. The win pushed Burduli's season record to a team-leading 9-2.
Spicer, a freshman, needed a tiebreaker in his first round match against Pacific's Clara Schumacher before prevailing, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). Spicer then rolled into the third round with a convincing 6-3, 6-0 victory over Cal Poly's Diane Filip.
Two other Cougar players fell in the second round after each received an opening-round bye. Senior Amy Toth battled No. 10 seed Stephanie Kusano of Cal to within a break of serve in the second set before falling, 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Anastesia Opata played two close sets but came up shy against Sacramento State's Joyce Martinez Gutierrez, 6-3, 6-4.
In double play all three Cougar teams reached the second round. Burduli and Marjolein van de Ven posted an 8-3 win over Cal Poly's Filip and Brittany Blalock and will now meet the tournament's top-seeded duo of Suzi Babos and Suzi Fodor of Cal in the next round.
Opata and Spicer posted an 8-2 win over Washington's Allison Rainey and Melinda Wong in the first round before dropping an 8-0 decision to Nevada's Caroline Bailly and Maria Mizyuk. Toth and Aleksandra Cekic faced Pacific-10 Conference foe Carmen Serementa and Claudia Hirt of Oregon in the second round after and opening-round bye. The Duck duo emerged with an 8-3 win.
Cekic, van de Ven and Aleksandra Stefanova all had singles matches Friday, however results were not available as of press time.
Play continues through Monday at the ITA Northwest Regional.
