Huskies Battle To Overtime Draw With San Diego State
Oct. 20, 2006
SEATTLE - Washington battled to a double overtime scoreless draw with San Diego State in Pac-10 men's soccer action at Husky Soccer Field, Friday night.
The Huskies (9-5-1, 2-5-1 Pac-10) outshot the Aztecs (7-5-2, 3-2-1 Pac-10) 20-6, but failed to find the back of net. Five of San Diego State's six shots came in overtime, but the UW defense held the Aztecs at bay.
One of Washington's best scoring opportunities came in the 59th minute when a penalty kick attempt by UW midfielder Jo Jo Katz was saved by SDSU goalkeeper Tally Hall. The Huskies ended up with many near misses in the second half, including shots by junior forward Kevin Forrest and sophomore midfielder Raphael Cox that hit the inside of the post and a shot by junior forward Ely Allen that barely cleared the top of the goal.
Washington had a breakaway opportunity in the waning seconds of the final overtime period, but Cox was called offsides right before the horn.
The Huskies were shutout by the Aztecs in San Diego in the earlier season meeting, Oct. 1, 1-0.
'We deserved to win the match,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'All we can do is take satisfaction that we blocked them off, we didn't let them score. We played way better tonight than we did down there, played them off the park in terms of chances but we couldn't convert.'
UW goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins was credited with his fifth shutout of the season, the sixth for the Huskies overall. It was the fifth shutout of the season for Hall as well. Both keepers tallied two saves in the match.
The contest was a physical affair with six cautions being issued including five to San Diego State. It was the first draw of the season for the Huskies, who had lost five of the last six matches before tonight. It was also the second-straight overtime match for UW, which fell to Cal, 3-2, this past Sunday in Berkeley.
UW will face 10th-ranked UCLA on Sunday, Oct. 22, at 2:30 pm at Husky Soccer Field. The Bruins defeated Oregon State in Corvallis, Friday, 3-0.
