No. 21 USC Finishes Off ASU In 1-0 Win
Oct. 20, 2006
TEMPE, ARIZ. - The No. 21 USC women's soccer team punched in its first Pac-10 win of the year, getting the job done with a first-half goal and then relying on its staunch defense to claim a 1-0 win over Arizona State on Friday night in Tempe, Ariz. USC junior Lauren Brown tacked up her fourth goal of the year and second game-winning strike with her score in the 24th minute. The shutout victory marks the Trojans' 10th shutout of the year and pushes their record to 8-3-3 overall and 1-1-2 in Pac-10 play. ASU is now 6-7-2, 1-4.
After having two shots on goal stopped by ASU goalkeeper Kim Bingham and one offisides call stifle another attack, the Women of Troy broke through on their sixth shot of the game when Brown chipped a shot over Bingham to the top corner of the net in the 24th minute of play. That score marked Brown's fourth of the year, with her last score coming as the game-winner against San Diego on Sept. 22.
USC goalkeeper Veronica Simonton faced her first shot on goal in the 33rd minute of play, making the save to keep the Trojans' lead safe. A pair of USC corner kicks lined the Trojans up for late first-half chances to get on the board again. Rosa Anna Tantillo's first corner resulted in a shot from Amy Rodriguez, but the attempt was blocked by a defender. Tantillo took another corner soon after in the 44th minute and got it on line for Janessa Currier, but Currier's header went wide of the net, keeping the game at a 1-0 USC lead for the second half.
A USC foul after a corner kick chance took the ball away from the Trojans early in the second half, but it wasn't long until USC got back on the attack. Stacey Strong took the next shot on goal for the Women of Troy, but it was gathered up by Bingham in the 59th minute. Three more USC shot came fast. Strong, Nini Loucks and Jamie Petrossi all knocked in shots within a minute's time, but Bingham got to each of them by the close of the 63rd minute.
USC and ASU traded shots on goal late in the game. Tantillo took a strike on Bingham first, resulting in her seventh save of the match. Eleven second later, the Sun Devils made an attack of their own, with Kyleyn Felts putting a shot against Simonton that the junior took care of to close out her eighth solo shutout of the season.
USC next faces Arizona in a 1 p.m. game on Sunday (Oct. 22) in Tucson, Ariz.
