Bears Perfect in Singles in Day One of Northwest Regional

Oct. 20, 2006

BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team had a near flawless first day of the ITA Northwest Regional on Friday at the Hellman Tennis Center. The Golden Bears went undefeated in singles matches on their home court, as all eight Bears advanced into the round of 32.

Six of the eight Cal players received first-round byes, one of which was the No. 2 seed and defending Northwest Regional champion, senior Zsuzsanna Fodor. In her lone match on the opening day, she made short work of her match against Femke Stribis of Saint Mary's, defeating her 6-1;6-2.

Two Bears who picked up multiple singles victories were sophomores Bojana Bobusic and Claire Ilcinkas. Bobusic breezed by Devin Peek of Cal Poly in the first round, 6-0;6-1, and in the second round, Stephanie Ordoveza of Saint Mary's, 6-1;6-1. Ilcinkas had a little bit of tougher test in the opening round. After dropping the first set to Laetitia Tan of Nevada, she won the second set and came back after trailing in the third set to win the match, 4-6;6-4;7-6(8). She later defeated Tara Simpson of Washington to advance to the third round.

Another impressive showing on the day was by freshman Nina Henkel, who shut out her second-round opponent, Sacramento State's Joyce Martinez Guiterrez, 6-0;6-0.

The next highest seed in tournament for Cal after Fodor is the No. 9 seed junior Cristina Visico. Visico nearly duplicated Henkel's feat of shutting out her opponent, Portland's Jenna Tanzer, defeating her 6-1;6-0.

In doubles action, the Bears were almost as impressive, gaining three wins out of five matches. The top seeded tandem of junior Susie Babos and Fodor led the way with an impressive 8-1 victory over Anna Powaska and Simone Templeton of Oregon. The duo of Henkel and Moore continued their winning ways, knocking off Amanda Griffin and Bruna Paes of Fresno State, 8-5.

The Northwest Regional continues tomorrow and goes through Monday.
