Oct. 21, 2006
BERKELEY - Following the impressive showing yesterday, the California women's tennis team had another strong performance in the second day of the ITA Northwest Regional, Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Center. Six Golden Bears advanced into the round of 16, including the defending Northwest Regional champion, senior Zsuzsanna Fodor.
Fodor picked up three wins on the day. In singles, she defeated Aleksandra Stefanova of Washington State, 6-1;6-3. In doubles, her and junior Susie Babos won twice to advance to the semifinals. In the round of 16, the duo knocked off Ekaterina Burduli and Marjolein VandeVen of Washington State 8-6. They later breezed by Stanford's Megan Doheny and Whitney Deason, 8-1.
Juniors Cristina Visico, Stephanie Kusano, Marion Ravelojaona and Daron Moore moved on to the round of 16 with singles victories, along with Fodor and freshman Nina Henkel. Visico and Kusano had convincing wins, as Visico beat Ly Huong Dinh of Nevada, 6-2;6-1 and Kusano was defeating Nevada's Alice Hall, 6-1;5-0 when Hall got injured. Moore had a little bit of trouble winning her first set against Cal Poly's Carol Erickson, but won her match in two sets, 7-6(4);6-2.
The tandem of Babos and Fodor was the only one to reach the semifinals as Moore and Henkel were eliminated as well as the team of Ravelojaona and Kusano.
