Fansler Forces Her Way Into ITA West Semifinals
Oct. 21, 2006
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - USC freshman Sarah Fansler will have another busy day on Sunday at the ITA West Regionals in San Diego, Calif. With yet another singles win, No. 12 seed Fansler has worked her way into the semifinals, where she will face No. 2 seed Bianca Dulgheru of Pepperdine. But her day won't be committed to singles action alone. The freshman is paired with senior Dianne Matias for doubles action, and the duo knocked through two more opponents on Saturday to work into the semifinals against their own teammates, Judy DeVera / Amanda Fink. USC senior pair Anca Anastasiu / Julie Smekodub also pinned up Saturday doubles wins to make it three USC teams in the doubles semis on Sunday morning.
Freshman Fansler's singles competition for Saturday involved a matchup against UCLA's Riza Zalameda. Fansler's trend of getting the job done in two sets continued, as she posted a 6-3, 7-5 win in the quarterfinals to earn that semifinal spot against Dulgheru at noon on Sunday.
On the Trojan-dominated doubles scene, Anastasiu/Smekodub began the day with a Round of 16 win over UCLA's Zalameda/McGoodwin, upending the top-ranked Bruin pair with an 8-6 decision. Next. Anastasiu/Smwkodub met another UCLA duo, Joelson/Lumpkin in the quarterfinals, and the Trojans dispatched those Bruins 8-3. They now face Arizona's Jakowlew/Todorova in Sunday's semifinal.
In the other semifinal, USC will turn on its own with a matchup between Trojans DeVera/Fink and Fansler/Matias. DeVera/Fink toppled Long Beach State's Williams/Bengson 8-5 before powering past UCLA's Schnack/Lin 8-3 for their spot in the semis. Fansler/Matias, meanwhile, got a win by withdrawal in the Round of 16, and then overcame Pepperdine's Kosakowski/Dulgheru 8-3 in the quarterfinals.
