Five Cardinal Netters Advance In Singles Action

STANFORD, Calif.- Five members of the Stanford women's tennis team have advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships, which continued Saturday in Berkeley.
Leading the Cardinal into the next round is top-seeded senior Theresa Logar, who registered a 6-0, 6-1 win over Washington State's Ashley Spicer. On Sunday, Logar will face Fresno State's Renata Kucerkova, who is coming off a pair of 6-1, 6-0 victories.
Junior Celia Durkin, junior Whitney Deason, sophomore Jessica Nguyen and freshman Lindsay Burdette are also moving on to the round of 16 thanks to a pair of straight set wins. Fourth-seeded Durkin defeated Saint Mary's Nienke Strujbis 6-0, 6-0 before routing Oregon's Claudia Hirt 7-5, 6-1. Sixth-seeded Deason blanked Nevada's Caroline Bailly 6-0, 6-0 and downed Pacific's Vana Mrazovic 6-3, 6-3. Burdette defeated Danon Beatty of Fresno State 6-3, 6-1 before cruising past Washington State's Marjolein VandeVen 6-0, 6-3. Nguyen easily handled Fresno State's Vanessa Heroux 6-2, 6-0.
After defeating Gonzaga's Sydney Lederhouse 6-0, 6-3, junior Lejla Hodzic dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 decision to Fresno State's Melanie Gloria. Also in singles, sophomore Megan Doheny lost to Oregon's Anna Powaska 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 after notching a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Saint Mary's Caitlin Aloia.
In doubles action, Stanford's eighth-seeded duo of Durkin and Nguyen moved into Sunday's semifinal match after edging California's Mar Ravelojaona and Stephanie Kuson 8-5 and Oregon's AnaCelia Olivia and Domenica Dieskova 8-6.
Senior Anne Yelsey and Burdette are headed toward a quarterfinal duel with Fresno State's Melanie Gloria and Renata Kucerkova following an 8-2 rout of Oregon's Carmen Seremata and Claudia Hirt.
Stanford's duo of Doheny and Deason were stopped by California's No. 1 team of Suzi Babos and Suzi Fodor 8-1 after collecting a pair of 8-3 victories in the previous rounds.
In consolation doubles competition, Hodzic and Logar will play in Sunday's quarterfinal. The tandem scored back-to-back 8-2 victories over Washington's Allison Rainey and Melinda Wong and Sacramento State's Cecilia Holland and Kar Jorlkaganova.
