Huskies Thrive in Early Rounds of ITA Regionals

STANFORD, Calif. -- The Husky men's tennis team stormed out of the blocks at the ITA Northwest Regionals in Stanford, Calif., going 11-3 in day one action. Six out of eight Huskies reached the Round of 32 in the singles bracket, while three out of four doubles teams reached the Round of 32.
Alex Slovic (Pancevo, Serbia), lived up to his billing as the overall No. 1 seed winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 over Santa Clara's Blaine Shields.
Sophomore Patrik Fischer (Huttwil, Bern, Switzerland) was the next highest seeded Husky (No. 5) to advance, winning 7-5, 6-2 over Hawaii's Chad Faulk. Daniel Chu (Vancouver, B.C.), the No. 8 seed also advanced in straight sets, taking out Fresno State's Taylor Leiby 7-6 (5), 6-0.
Andy Kuharszky (Budapest, Hungary) was the only other seeded Husky in singles action and he advanced easily by defeating Stanford's Dave Ryan 6-2, 6-2.
Unseeded Michael Ricks (Orinda, Calif.) and Derek Drabble (Johannesburg, South Africa) both won twice on Friday to advance to the round of 32.
Fischer and Ricks, fresh off the Bulldog Classic doubles title, teammed up to win 8-3 over the Stanford duo of Kevin Kaiser and Dave Ryan to advance to the Double Round of 32.
