Trojans Place Fourth at CSUF Cross Country Invitational
Oct. 21, 2006
In her first meet of the season, USC senior Kristen Berglas picked up where she left off last season by leading the Women of Troy runners with a 15th-place finish (18:48) at the CS Fullerton Invitational on Friday (Oct. 20) in Fullerton, Calif. The Trojans finished in fourth place in the team standings with a total of 109 points, trailing only UCSB (52), Long Beach State (96) and Cal State San Marcos (106) in the 11-university meet.
'I am very pleased with the first race for Kristen,' said USC cross country coach Tom Walsh. 'To go through all of the injuries this season and then to run the way she did in her first week back, I was impressed.'
With Berglas leading the way in Fullerton, she became the fifth runner in five meets to lead the Trojan team. Senior Ashley Jensen, who led USC in their last meet, placed 17th with a time of 18:52 and continues to improve.
Freshman Bridget Helgerson was the third Trojan finisher, placing 20th with her collegiate-best time of 18:55.
'Bridget broke the 19-minute mark for the first time,' said Walsh. 'She will only get better. I'm really pleased with her effort.'
Freshman Katherine Ellis finished in 26th place with a time of 19:10. That time was her college best and was USC's fourth-fastest time on the day.
Troy's fifth runner was freshman Daniela Gergley, who valiantly battled dizziness down the stretch and still set a PR with a time of 19:19 to place 31st.
Rounding out the Trojans' strong team effort, but not figuring in the scoring were freshman Jennifer Wells (20:03), freshman Kelsey Connor (20:09), senior Christina Eads (20:30) and junior Sara Fusco (21:51).
Sophomore Christine Greer was held out of the meet due to shin splints, but should be available for next week's Pac-10 Championship, hosted by Stanford on Oct. 28 in Palo Alto, Calif.
