PULLMAN, Wash. -Washington State women's soccer upset No. 18 California Sunday as the Cougars blanked the Bears 2-0 in Pacific-10 Conference play. The victory marks the Cougars' first win over California since 2002 and brings WSU's record to 8-5-3 overall and 3-1-1 in conference play.

'I thought we showed a lot of character today,' said head coach Matt Potter. 'We've said all along its one game at a time and California is a very, very good team that's been ranked all year. Today's victory is a quality win against a quality team and it puts us right in the thick of thing as we look ahead.'

The Cougars netted the game-winner at the 18:03 mark as Allison Scurich blasted a free kick from 35 yards out. The ball deflected off the left post and the fingertips of California keeper Anna Key before finding the back of the net for Scurich's second goal of the season.

Washington State was on the scoreboard again seconds later as Kiersten Dallstream picked up her second goal of the year at the 18:22 mark. Dallstream settled a pass from Kim Bonnes and sent a low shot far post from 18 yards out. The 19 seconds between the two Cougar tallies marks the shortest elapsed time between goals in WSU's 11 seasons of Pac-10 play.

Six of the Cougars' eight shots were on goal with Dallstream leading the offense with three, all on frame. Scurich added two shots, both on goal, while Anna Miller, Natalie Elkind and Caeli Abeyta each added one.

The victory marks the Cougars' fourth shutout in five conference matches and the eighth shutout of the season. Washington State keeper Brynn Bemis earned her fifth shutout of 2006 bringing her goals against average to 0.58.

Washington State continues its conference schedule with a trip to Los Angeles where the Cougars face No. 21 USC Friday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. and No. 3 UCLA Sunday, Oct. 29 at noon.
