Fansler's Big Day Is A Success; Freshman Is In Singles and Doubles Finals

Oct. 22, 2006

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The USC women's tennis team has virtually taken over this year's ITA West Regional. Trojan freshman Sarah Fansler announced her presense on the collegiate tennis scene by powering into the championship singles match AND the championship doubles match along with teammate Dianne Matias. No. 12 seed Fansler dropped Pepperdine's No. 2 seed Bianca Dulgheru 7-6 (5), 6-2 in Sunday's semifinals. She will face UCLA's Yasmin Schnack in the singles final on Monday at 10 a.m. in San Diego. In doubles action, she and Matias will face USC teammates Anca Anastasiu / Julie Smekodub in the doubles final that is scheduled to be played at USC on Tuesday.

Fansler is the third consecutive USC freshman to work her way into the ITA West Regional singles championship match, as current USC sophomore Amanda Fink won the singles title last year as a freshman, and current junior Lindsey Nelson also reached the final as a freshman in 2004.

With three teams in Sunday's doubles semifinals, the Women of Troy were guaranteed at least one finalist pair. But the Trojans did it one better by pushing through two doubles duos into Tuesday's championship match. The No. 8 seeded freshman/senior tandem of Sarah Fansler / Dianne Matias got the best of their fifth-seeded USC teammates Judy DeVera / Amanda Fink with an 8-5 semifinal win to move into the final. Meanwhile, another USC veteran/newcomer pair of senior Anca Anastasiu and senior transfer Julie Smekodub was getting the job done in the other semifinal match. Unseeded Anastasiu/Smekodub made it a clean sweep of unseeded Arizona team Jakolew/Todorova with an 8-0 victory to push into the championship match.

It was another busy day for USC freshman Fansler, who did double duty with a semifinal showdown in the singles action as well. No. 12 seeded Fansler battled Pepperdine's No. 2 seed Bianca Dulgheru in Sunday's semis and delivered the upset with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 decision, earning her place in the ITA West Regional singles championship against UCLA's Yasmin Schnack.
