WSU Wraps Up Fall Season In San Diego
Oct. 22, 2006
What's Happening This Week: The Washington State men's golf team is all set to begin play at the 2006 Barona Collegiate Cup, Oct 23-24, at Barona Creek Golf Club in Lakeside, Calif. The 54-hole tournament gets underway with the first two rounds on Monday, while the final 18 holes are to be contested on Tuesday. Both days will feature a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start on the 7,315-yard, par-72 course.
This event marks the last of the 2006 fall season for the Cougars and head coach Walt Williams hopes the season fall campaign ends on a high note.
The Field: Nine schools in this year's 18-team field are ranked in the top 100 in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin ratings released Oct. 16, including host No. 60 San Diego State. UAB is the highest-ranked team in the tournament at No. 38, followed by San Jose State (59), Colorado State (63), Wichita State (72), Saint Mary's (88), Utah (89), UC Davis (91) and (94) Washington State.
Traveling for the Cougars: Coach Walt Williams is sending a young lineup to San Diego this week. The WSU golfers competing in the 2006 Barona Collegiate Cup will be senior Chris Collins, junior Jordan Mason, and three freshman, Nick Grigsby, Jeff Langin, and Kevin Tucker.
Last Time Out: Alister Mackenzie Invitational: Grabbing the second top-25 finish in his young WSU career, freshman Nick Grigsby finished in a tie for 16th in the Alister Mackenzie Invitational. Grigsby's performance was aided by a 65 in the second round. Grigsby's second round 65 was his lowest score since becoming a Cougar and is the lowest of any Cougar who has played this season.
After turning in a final-round score of 16-over 300, the Washington State men's golf team fell four spots to finish ninth as a team at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational.
