Oct. 23, 2006
BERKELEY - The California women's tennis team defeated Stanford three times on Monday at the Hellman Tennis Center to claim the singles and the doubles titles at the ITA Northwest Regional.
Senior Zsuzsanna Fodor, who won the Northwest Regional tournament a year ago, won the doubles tournament this year with junior Susie Babos. They defeated the Cardinal's Celia Durkin and Jessica Nguyen, 8-2. The duo qualified for the ITA National Indoor Championships. Babos, who won the Northwest Regional singles title two years ago, will also compete in the singles bracket.
They will be joined at the event by freshman Nina Henkel who defeated two Stanford players in the semifinals and the finals to win the singles title. In the semifinals, she trailed No. 1 seed Theresa Logar 5-2, but rebounded to win the set and the match, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. Later that day, Henkel beat Nguyen in the championship round, 7-5, 6-4, to win the tournament.
'It's nice to see our team owning these championships, that previously Stanford had been winning,' head coach Jan Brogan said. 'Nina played well, but she hasn't played her best tennis yet.'
Said assistant coach Damon Coupe, 'After watching Jessica play yesterday, she seemed unbeatable and it seemed like she wasn't going to make too many errors. Nina had to stay focused and not let her emotions dictate her play. Her gameplan worked in giving her opportunities to do well.'
The championship victory was the 11th this fall for Henkel, as she currently holds a record of 11-2. The team of Babos and Fodor is 8-1 this season. The three Golden Bears will hope to gather more victories at the ITA National Indoor Championships, which take place from Nov. 2-5 in Columbus, Ohio.
