Eric Frampton, Darryl Blunt Named Pac-10 Players of the Week

Oct. 23, 2006

PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State safety Eric Frampton and punter Darryl Blunt have been named the Pacific-10 Conference's Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, after helping the Cougars defeat No. 16 Oregon, 34-23, Saturday afternoon at Martin Stadium.

Frampton, a senior from San Jose, Calif., registered a career-high 16 tackles, including nine solo, to lead the WSU defense. Frampton added a tackle-for-loss and pass break-up as the Cougar defense forced four turnovers and held the Ducks without an offensive touchdown until midway through the fourth quarter.

The hard-hitting safety leads WSU in tackles at 9.2 per game and is ranked 27th in the nation. His three interceptions on the season has him tied for 50th among all NCAA Division-I players. He is the third Cougar defender to earn pac-10 defensive player of the week honors this season, joining teammates Mkristo Bruce and Scott Davis.

Blunt, a sophomore from Los Angeles, Calif., put the Ducks in poor field position on all three of his punts as he averaged 49.3 yards, none of which were returned. Blunt's first attempt went for 50 yards and was downed on the Oregon one-yard line. On his next punt, Blunt sent one a career-best 62 yards which was downed on the Duck 20. It marked the longest punt by a Cougar since Kyle Basler's school-record 87-yard effort at Arizona during the 2004 season. Blunt's final punt went for 36 yards and was downed at the Oregon eight-yard line.

Blunt is the second Cougar to capture Pac-10 special teams player of the week honors this season, joining kicker Loren Langley who was named following his game-winning field goal against Baylor. The conference honors are the first for both Blunt and Frampton.

California running back Marshawn Lynch came away with the offensive award. Freshman running back Dwight Tardy was WSU's nominee following his season-best 145-yard, one touchdown performance against Oregon.
