UCLA, STANFORD TIED FOR LEAD AT HALFWAY POINT

Only one game separates league-leaders UCLA and STANFORD from USC and WASHINGTON, but things could change as the second half opens with the Los Angeles schools visiting the Washington schools... OREGON looks to carry over its first half success as it takes on OREGON STATE, while the Arizona schools entertain the Bay Area schools... This week's AVCA rankings show four Pac-10 teams among the top six with No. 3 Stanford, No. 4 UCLA, No. 5 USC, and No. 6 WASHINGTON. CALIFORNIA is at No. 11. The OREGON Ducks continue their assault on the rankings, and are just outside the Top 25 at No. 26 this week... Jim Watson will call the action for this week's FSN match between UCLA and Washington, with Karch Kiraly and Holly McPeak providing color commentary.

UCLA'S NANA MERIWETHER NAMED PAC-10 VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

UCLA middle blocker Nana Meriwether has been named the Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week for Oct. 16-22, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Meriwether, a senior from Potomac, Md., led the Bruins in kills, attack percentage, blocks and points as UCLA defeated No. 5 USC to push their record to 21-1 overall, 8-1 in Conference, giving them sole possession of the Conference's top spot.

Friday's win marked UCLA's first win over USC since a home sweep of the Women of Troy on Nov. 3, 2000 in Pauley Pavillion. Meriwether tallied 19 kills, 10 kills, and added two digs marking her 18th double-figure kill performance of the season and her third with double figure blocks. In addition, Meriwether posted a .486 hitting percentage, the 16th time she has hit .400 or better in a match.

This is the third weekly honor for Meriwether, her second for the season, and UCLA's 51st Pac-10 Player of the Week all-time.

PAC-10 NOTES

  • ARIZONA - After picking up their first conference win last week against Oregon State, the Wildcats fell victim to the Washington schools over the weekend, but not without a fight. Sophomore Brooke Buringrud led the Wildcats with 17 kills, while freshman Alanna Resch tallied a career-best seven kills with a match-high .385 hitting percentage, and senior Stephanie Butkus added a match-best 45 assists... The `Cats held No. 6 Washington to hit just .217, holding the Huskies to their lowest hitting percentage of the season.

  • ARIZONA STATE - Junior L Sydney Donahue posted 15 digs against Washington then tallied 35 more digs against Washington State, her highest mark against a Conference opponent this season. Donahue has recorded 10 or more digs in 64 of her career 74 matches played and sits just three digs away from reaching 1,500 for her career.

  • CALIFORNIA - The Golden Bears snapped a four-match losing streak with a three-game sweep over Oregon State... Sophomore Ellen Orchard and freshman Hana Cutura led Cal with 12 kills a piece, while sophomore Morgan Beck tallied 11... Beck has been playing all positions in the rotation- outside hitting and middle blocking. She hit .310 versus the Oregon schools with 12 total blocks.

  • OREGON - The Ducks upset No. 8 California, 3-1, marking their first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 16 Arizona, 3-2, at the McKale Center on Oct. 30, 1998... Sophomore L Katie Swoboda has posted double-digit digs in the last nine matches, averaging 5.8 digs per game over that span... Swoboda has tallied 351 digs this season, with 193 coming from the last nine matches.

  • OREGON STATE - With freshmen Camila Ah-Hoy and Tricia Yashimura injured during last week's battle against Arizona State, sophomore S Ashley Evans and freshman DS Ali Walker were forced into the spotlight... Evans has accounted for 60 percent of the teams total assists over the last four matches, totaling 78 assists over the last five... Walker, who has posted 94 total digs this season, has averaged 10 digs over the last four matches.

  • STANFORD - The Cardinal swept the Oregon schools for the 34th consecutive time. The last time Stanford split dates goes back to the 1989 season when Stanford beat Oregon State, 3-0, on Sept. 29, but fell to Oregon, 2-3, Sept. 30... Sophomore Cynthia Barboza collected 20 kills, two aces and 14 digs against Oregon State to hit a team-leading .471. Barboza then logged six blocks, including two block solos, as well as nine kills to sweep the Ducks.... The weekend victories pushed Coach John Dunning's record to an even 600 career wins.

  • UCLA - UCLA snapped an 11-match-losing streak to cross-town rival USC with a 3-1 victory over The Women of Troy... The Bruins finished with three players in double-figure kills, led by senior MB Nana Meriwether with 19. Senior OH Kaite Carter added 17, while sophomore OH Ali Daley tallied 12... UCLA has had two or more players in double-figure kills in the last three matches, and 18 different times this season.

  • USC - USC's freshman S Taylor Carico has been a key to the offense for the Women of Troy. Carico is currently fifth in the Conference averaging 12.44 assists per game and is 10th among active leaders with 908 assists. Carico needs 273 more assists to break into USC's all-time season records list... The only freshman on the single-season assists is Christine Brigman with 1,233 assists in 1987... Overall, there are just nine freshmen listed among USC's single-season top 10 record holders.

  • WASHINGTON - Junior OH Christal Morrison led the Washington attack last weekend, recording 18 kills, three aces, 13 digs and a block vs. ASU and 24 kills, 16 digs and two blocks vs. Arizona. While in Arizona, Morrison moved into eighth on the UW all-time kills list (1,200) and ninth on the UW all-time aces list (99). With two double-doubles last week, Morrison has nine on the season, including seven of the last eight matches.

  • WASHINGTON STATE - The Cougars split at the Arizona schools, defeating Arizona 3-1 for the first time in 10 years, and then falling at Arizona State, 1-3 ...Phoenix native Brittany Johnson had 28 kills and eight blocks during the two matches...Senior OH Kelly Rosin chipped in 22 kills and 27 digs while down in cactus country. Rosin has recorded a double-double in three of the last five matches, averaging.3.2 kpg and 2.7 dpg.
