Oct. 25, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford freshman Kristin Stannard, has been named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week announced the magazine today. Stannard is among the nation's top 18 players for the first time in her career, and is the first Cardinal freshman to be honored in 2006.
Stannard played a key role in a pair of Cardinal wins this weekend, leading the team to its second-straight conference sweep and the team's longest Pac-10 winning streak since 2002. On Friday night, Stannard took three shots, and helped the Stanford defense shutout the Washington State Cougars for the first time in conference play. On Sunday, Stannard was involved in both Cardinal goals, leading the Cardinal to a 2-0 shutout of Washington. She netted her first career game-winner (fourth career goal) in just the fourth minute, marking the quickest goal for the Cardinal this season. In the 63rd minute, Stannard helped the Cardinal score again, sending a perfect ball ahead to Kelley O'Hara.
Stannard led the team with nine shots for the weekend, and now stands third in Cardinal scoring, with nine points on the year. The Cardinal freshman class has now combined for 14 goals and 31 points this season, accounting for nearly half of Cardinal scoring.
Stanford will meet Oregon State and Oregon this weekend at Maloney Field, with kickoff scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. with the Beavers and Sunday at 1 p.m. with the Ducks.
