Who, What, When, Where: Washington State swimming travels to California to face UC Davis and California in back-to-back dual meets...Cougars will first travel to Davis and the Schaal Aquatics Center for a 1:30 p.m. meet Friday, Oct. 27...Saturday, Oct. 28, Cougars take on the Golden Bears at California's Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Cougar Recap: WSU hosted its first home dual meets of the 2006-07 season...San Jose State visited Gibb Pool Friday, Oct. 20 and Cal State Northridge came to Pullman Saturday, Oct. 21...the Cougars defeated the Spartans by a score of 181-77 Friday...WSU won 13 of 14 events against the Spartans...Erin McCleave led all scorers with three individual wins...WSU also swept the top three spots in four events...Cougars defeated Cal State Northridge Saturday 151-50...Bryn Mooney, Michaela Ahlin and Erin McCleave each turned in 18 points for the Cougars...WSU took first place in all 11 events and swept the top three spots in five individual events en route to their third consecutive victory.
Erin McCleave Sets Gibb Pool Record: Senior All-American Erin McCleave set a Gibb Pool record in the 200 freestyle Friday against San Jose State...just after taking first place in the 1000 freestyle, McCleave turned in a time of 1:51.93 in the 200 freestyle to set the record and come in first place...McCleave turned in four individual wins on the weekend as well as two relay victories.
WSU Freshmen Make Big Impact: Freshmen Michaela Ahlin and Shawna Keller both turned in standout performances for the Cougars...Ahlin came in first in four individual events while Keller had three individual wins...Ahlin's times of 57.01 in the 100 butterfly and 2:05.96 in the 200 butterfly earned her a spot in both categories in the WSU All-Time Top 10 List...Keara Sheahan and Brett Bogachus also made their Cougar swimming debuts.
Scouting the Aggies: UC Davis is coming off a fourth place finish at the Pacific Tiger Invitational in Stockton, Calif...prior to the Invitational, the Aggies hosted their first home meet of the season with a double-dual meet against San Jose State and UC Santa Cruz...Davis defeated both teams to take a 2-0 dual meet record...the Aggies were picked to finish fourth in the Big West Conference in the 2006-07 preseason poll...head coach Barbara Jahn is in her 32nd year...UC Davis is led by senior Hannah Watanabe who set a school record last year in the 100 butterfly...freshman Heidi Kucera set a school record in the 200 breaststroke in only her second collegiate meet with a time of 2:20.42.
Scouting the Golden Bears: California is coming off a bye week after opening its season with wins over Northwestern and Minnesota...in the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America national poll, the Bears ranked No. 1 in the nation...head coach Teri McKeever is in her 15th year with the Bears...last year, the Cougars dropped a 168-94 decision to the Golden Bears in the season-opener for both teams...California boasts a roster of six returning All-Americans...sophomore Jessica Hardy was the 2006 NCAA champion in the 100 breaststroke...sophomore transfer Dana Vollmer joins the Golden Bears after swimming at the University of Florida...Vollmer was a member of the 2004 Olympic squad and won a gold medal in the 800 free relay.
Looking Ahead: The Cougars return to the friendly confines of Gibb Pool to host in-state rivals Washington, Friday, Nov. 10 in a 5:00 p.m. contest.
