Husky Football Team Starts New Tradition
Oct. 26, 2006
SEATTLE -- One of the greatest traditions in college football is the legion of fans that moor their boats next to Husky Stadium to tailgate on the shores of Union Bay on Lake Washington.
This weekend, the Husky football team will attempt to launch a new tradition prior to Saturday's homecoming game against Arizona State by arriving to the stadium near the Waterfront Activities Center and making a special Husky Walk to the stadium.
'I am hopeful that this will help spark a new tradition,' said Tyrone Willingham, UW's second-year head football coach. 'I hope it is another one of those pieces of connection between our fans and our football team. I've always said that this university has such great passion about its football team. I believe, honestly, that it is the most passion place about its football team on the west coast. It is a nice opportunity for us to continue that connection with our fans.'

At approximately 1:45 p.m., buses will deliver the team, which will then make a special walk from lakeside, through the Southeast parking areas and into the stadium. Fans are encouraged to come by, show their support and enjoy a performance by the alumni band. In addition, the UW women's rowing team will raise their oars to create a special archway under which the team will walk on its way to the stadium.
Normally the team arrives for each home game in a somewhat private manner, being dropped off by bus at the doors of Bank of America Arena near its locker room. However, Todd Turner, the UW director of athletics, worked closely with the Willingham, the football and athletics staffs and various other groups to discuss ways to bring together the traditions of Husky Stadium and create a special arrival for the team. Through those discussions, this special homecoming walk was created.
