Johnson Leads Bruins to Sweep of Cougars

PULLMAN, Wash. - Rachell Johnson led four Bruins with double-figure kills as UCLA posted a 30-27., 30-28, 30-25 win at Washington State on Thursday night. With the win, the Bruins improve to 23-1 (9-1 Pac-10) while the Cougars fall to 14-10 (2-8 Pac-10).
Game one saw the Bruins take an early 10-8 lead, but Washington State came back to tie it at 19-19. From that point, the teams traded oint before the Bruins put together a four-point run for a 25-20 lead, featuring a kill from Nana Meriwether and an ace from Jade Machado. The Bruins would not relinquish the lead and took the 30-27 opening game victory on a Johnson kill.
In game two, the Cougars scored the first point before UCLA sprinted out to an early 7-2 lead. The Bruins would not trail again although there were five ties in the game with the last coming at 28-28. From that point, the Bruins closed out the game and went to the locker rooms with a two games to none lead behind consecutive kills from setter Nellie Spicer, two of her three kills to go with 49 assists in the match.
Game three saw Washington State go out to a 10-6 lead and led by six points at 18-12 before the Bruins started chipping away at the lead. The lead was cut to three points at 19-16 on two Katie Carter kills. After the teams traded the next four points, UCLA tied the game at 21-all on a four-point run with a Meriwether kill and three Cougar attack errors. A Machado service aces gave the Bruins a 23-22 lead and UCLA would not trail again, closing out the match with kills from Johnson and Carter.
Johnson was UCLA's kill leader with 14 for the match while Meriwether had 13 kills and six blocks (two solo, four assists) for a team-high 17 points. The teams tied with eight blocks apiece while UCLA hit .247 to WSU's .190 in the match. The Bruins also led in aces, 4-3, and in digs, 60-56.
UCLA returns to action on Friday night in Seattle against No. 6 Washington. The Huskies defeated fifth-ranked USC in four games on Thursday night.
