Cougars Hold No. 20 USC to Scoreless Tie
Oct. 27, 2006
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Washington State women's soccer held No. 20 USC to a scoreless tie Friday as the Cougars and the Trojans battled through two overtime periods at USC's McAlister Field. With the tie, WSU moves to an 8-5-3 overall record and is 3-5-2 in conference play. USC is now 8-5-4 overall and holds a 1-1-4 record in the Pacific-10 Conference.
'It's a very tough environment to come and play in and we're obviously delighted to leave with a clean sheet,' said head coach Matt Potter. 'It was a very cagey game in the sense that both teams almost at times nullified each other's strengths. Even though it's a good solid tie on the road against a very good team, we had a couple of opportunities that we would have taken advantage of on another day. It's still another step in the right direction, though, as we move towards Sunday.'
The Trojans were on the hunt early as Amy Rodriguez slipped a past to Rosa Anna Tantillo, but Tantillo's shot swung wide. The Cougars answered back as Sasha Baines pushed the ball towards Elysse Van Leer who found herself one-on-one with Trojan goalkeeper Veronica Simonton. Van Leer's shot, however, sailed high. Senior Jocelyn Hein hit a hard shot on goal towards the end of the first half, but it was saved by WSU goalie Brynn Bemis. Despite USC's 7-4 shooting advantage, the first half remained scoreless.
The second half was much the same with both teams charging the net equally. The Cougars had a chance to score when Kim Bonnes' pass to Kiersten Dallstream led to another one-on-one matchup between Dallstream and Simonton. Simonton swiped the ball from Dallstream's feet before she could get a shot off.
At the end of both overtime periods, USC posted four shots to the Cougars's one, yet the game ended 0-0.
Bonnes, Van Leer, and Anna Miller all recorded two shots on the day with Allison Scurich and Jenny Christoph each contributing one shot of their own. Bemis totaled six saves, bringing her goals against average to 0.58.
The Cougars complete their Los Angeles road trip with a visit to No. 3 UCLA Sunday, Oct. 29 at noon.
