SEATTLE - Sophomore midfielder Raphael Cox and junior forward Kevin Forrest each scored goals to lead Washington men's soccer to a 2-1 victory over Gonzaga in a battle of Northwest rivals at Husky Soccer Field, Friday evening.

The match was the regular season home finale for Washington, which improved to 11-5-1 overall with its second-straight win. Gonzaga fell to 6-8-2 overall. The Huskies have never lost to the Bulldogs, leading the all-time series 20-0-1.

Cox scored his fourth goal of the season in the 42nd minute to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead going into the intermission. Then Forrest gave Washington a two-goal cushion when he netted his conference leading 12th goal of the season in the 57th minute. Gonzaga pressed to score late in the match with seven of its nine shots coming in the second half. The Bulldogs' goal came on a penalty kick by John Palladino in the 78th minute and the Husky defense held Gonzaga at bay until the end.

'I was very pleased with the effort from the guys,' UW head coach Dean Wurzberger said. 'I thought our guys responded well to defend, especially getting the second goal which was key, obviously. That's a hard charging team (Gonzaga) that's done well, they've had some good results.'

UW goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins tallied two saves, while his counterpart Vito Higgins for Gonzaga grabbed four. Higgins saved what could have been another goal for Washington when he knocked a penalty kick attempt from Ely Allen just wide in the 44th minute.

The Huskies' first goal came when sophomore midfielder George John served a pass to Cox who put on some nifty moves to shake his defender and nailed the ball towards the far post. Cox also played a role in UW's second goal, serving a ball down the left wing to junior forward Ely Allen who then found Forrest. One-on-one with the goalkeeper on a fast break, Forrest connected on his shot from just inside the box.

The match also marked the final regular season home games for seniors Mike Cusenza, Matt Fischer and Ty Harden. The trio was recognized in a special ceremony prior to kick-off.

Washington will now play its final two regular season games on the road, as it heads South to face the Portland Pilots at Merlo Field, Sunday, Oct. 29, at noon. The Huskies will take on Oregon State in Corvallis, Nov. 3, the regular season finale for both teams.
