Day One Results from the Men's Tennis Thunderbird Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State Men's Tennis team kicked off their annual Thunderbird Tournament Friday, which wrapped up day one with four Sun Devils advancing to the semifinals in the singles Main Draw and three ASU doubles duos advancing to the semifinals in the doubles Main Draw. Play continues tomorrow morning with doubles at 9 a.m.

 

In singles action, the Sun Devils came out blazing as five-out-of-seven Devils advanced past the first round. In the round of 16, ASU's Juan Carlos Rebaza stepped up to easy defeat Arkansas's Jorge Villanueva 6-2, 6-1 while fellow Devils Wes Miller and Matt Brooklyn both took down their opponents in straight sets as well. The round also pitted Sun Devil vs. Sun Devil as TJ Bellama took on Nick Hegarty, who barely edged Bellama 7-5, 7-6(5).

 

In doubles, ASU came out as strong with Matt Brooklyn and Wes Miller pairing up to top UCI's Alex Sundling and Victor Lamm 8-3. On court three, Nick Hegarty and Ryan Waits teamed up to take down Auburn's Milan Krnjetin and Stephen Nash 8-5 while Juan Carlos Rebaza and TJ Bellama defeated ScottsdaleCommunity College's Rizk and Perez duo.

 

Action will continue tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. with the semifinal round of doubles being played, followed with the semifinal round of singles at ASU's WhitemanTennisCenter.
