No. 5 USC Volleyball Defeats Washington State in Three
Oct. 27, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - Asia Kaczor and Diane Copenhagen combined for 29 kills to lead the No. 5 Southern California volleyball team to a 30-24, 30-18, 30-15 defeat of Washington State Friday night before 669 fans at Bohler Gym.
Kaczor's 15 kills (.353) and Copenhagen's 14 kills (.522) gave USC (19-3 overall, 9-2 Pac-10) a dominating offense as the Women of Troy needed only 80 minutes to dispense the Cougs. Match-highs were tallied by libero Debora Seilhamer with 28 digs and three aces, and Katelyn Bishop's six blocks. Taylor Carico had 47 assists.
Senior Kelly Rosin led the Cougars (14-11 overall, 2-9 in Pac-10) with a match-high 17 kills. Brittany Johnson added 11 kills and each played also had a pair of blocks. Kelly Hyder and Stephanie Weishaar combined for 25 digs. Corina Beyer had 28 assists.
'Tonight I look at our performance and it's not a typical performance from us offensively, and not a typical performance from us defensively,' Cougar Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'A lot of that has to do with our opponent. I had some good conversations with Dick Bennett (WSU's men's basketball coach at the time) when I first arrived here about how there will be moments in time when you feel like it's a break-through moment, then sometimes you get a slap of reality. All these moments are moments we can either choose to allow us to get better or cause erosion. We can't take this loss into tomorrow; we have to get focused on the next task, and come back.'
Washington State travels to Oregon and Oregon State next week for a Thursday night match in Eugene and a Friday night match at Corvallis.
