Stanford Takes 15th In Collegiate Division At Head Of The American
Oct. 28, 2006
Sacramento, Calif. - The Stanford lightweight eight raced in the open collegiate event at the Head of the American on Saturday at Lake Natomas and finished with a time of 18:43 for an overall finish of fifteenth. The Cardinal finished 1:01 ahead of the lightweight crew from California.
'It's the first time we've raced in the eight this year, and we went 45 seconds faster here than we did last year, so that's a very nice start for our team,' said a pleased head coach Al Acosta.
The Stanford lightweight eight was comprised of seniors Meredith Coleman, Anna Lee and Jennie Morawetz, junior Olivia Prevost, sophomore Jessica Weigel, and freshmen Erin Conlon, Alex Liptsey-Rahe, Anne Stake and Olivia Trowers.
Stanford's lightweight four finished 13th in the collegiate fours event, also competing against openweight crews. The Cardinal four consisted of seniors Rene Spellman and Alison Wilhelm, sophomores Sam Azure and Jessica Bryant and freshman Caroline Stokes.
Head races are long distance races on rivers and lakes, typically three miles in length. The crews start single file, and attempt to pass other boats over the course while navigating turns and bridges.
