Oct. 28, 2006
Sacramento, Calif. - Stanford's eight was the top collegiate women's eight at the Head of the American at Lake Natomas in Sacramento on Saturday. The 'A' boat of seniors Stephanie Connolly and Carly York, juniors Kerry Birk, Jenifer Brown, Stephanie Morrison and Jessie Reel, sophomores Kathy Altman and Sophie Aubrey, and freshman Bea Gordon covered the 3-mile race in 17:08. California finished second with a time of 17:16.
Stanford's 'B' eight finished 9th overall in the same event of 22 crews. The crew was comprised of sophomores Lauren Hofmayer, Jess McNally, Araceli Ortiz, and Kerry Pigott as well as freshmen Amelia Carr, Kate Hanske, Alex Hasbach, Elle Logan, and Eva Sheridan.
Stanford also raced in the collegiate four and finished sixth overall behind boats from USC and California. Hofmayer, McNally, Logan, Sheridan and Lena Wolfe made up the crew. The winning time was 18:36 posted by the USC 'A' boat.
'This is the strongest we've felt this early in the season,' said the team's captain York.'The win in the eight is really a victory for the whole team. Each person here contributes to the overall speed every day. We've got a really special group, and I'm proud to be a part of it.'
This is the second solid performance for the Cardinal this fall after finishing in the top six universities at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta last Saturday in Boston.
'The fall racing season is great preparation for sprints in the spring, and head racing is an excellent way to make the training fun,' said head coach Yasmin Farooq. 'When you win and race well, it's a nice pay-off, and a reminder to the team that they're making progress. This year's team is extremely passionate and lively. They're really making the most of every day.'
Head races are long distance races on rivers and lakes, typically three miles in length. The crews start single file and attempt to pass other boats over the course while navigating turns and bridges.
