Sun Devils Down Washington In OT, 26-23
Oct. 28, 2006
SEATTLE (AP) - Rudy Carpenter threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Brent Miller on Arizona State's second play of overtime as the Sun Devils beat Washington 26-23 on Saturday in the first overtime game in Husky Stadium history.
Washington got the ball first in overtime, but moved backward five yards. Michael Braunstein kicked a career-long 47-yard field goal to put the Huskies up 23-20.
Carpenter threw incomplete on Arizona State's first play, and then found Miller streaking up the far sideline behind Washington linebacker Dan Howell. It was just Miller's third reception of the season and his first touchdown, as the Sun Devils (5-3 overall, 2-3 Pac-10) won their first conference road game since Nov. 5, 2005, at Washington State.
Washington (4-5, 2-4) lost its fourth straight, severely damaging its bowl hopes, and its second straight loss in overtime. Last week, the Huskies lost 31-24 in overtime at California, after tying the game on the last play of regulation.
The Huskies mounted a similar rally against the Sun Devils, scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns, the second directed by backup quarterback Johnny DuRocher, who took over for injured starter Carl Bonnell.
Bonnell, who made his first start last week against Cal in place of injured Isaiah Stanback, left with 7:35 remaining in regulation after getting hit while throwing by Arizona State's Dexter Dravis. No immediate word was given on Bonnell's injury, and Dravis was penalized for roughing the passer, keeping Washington's drive alive. Arizona State was penalized 16 times for 127 yards.
Bonnell suffered a third-degree shoulder sprain on his non-throwing shoulder last week, stayed down on the field for a few minutes before slowly walking off. Coach Tyrone Willingham chose not to go with highly touted freshman Jake Locker and inserted DuRocher, a junior.
DuRocher completed all four of his passes on the drive, assisted by a pass interference call on Arizona State defensive back Justin Tryon on third-and-5 at the Sun Devils 12. On third-and-goal, DuRocher rolled right then threw a strike to Sonny Shackelford for the TD, and Braunstein's extra point tied the score at 20.
Washington pulled within 20-13 when Shackelford threw a 41-yard double pass to Anthony Russo for a score with 11:04 remaining.
Arizona State backup running back Keegan Herring rushed for 98 and two touchdowns, his second score a 65-yard run on the last offensive play of the third quarter to give Arizona State a 20-6 lead.
Herring added a 19-yard TD run in the second quarter to give Arizona State a 14-3 lead, and caught three passes for 43 yards. Starter Ryan Torain go the bulk of the running with 23 carries for 98 yards.
Carpenter was careful and efficient, completing 16 of 22 passes for 170 yards - including a 12-yard scoring pass to Jamaal Lewis midway through the second quarter.
Bonnell struggled, completing just 9 of 23 passes for 67 yards and two interceptions. Louis Rankin made his first start of the season and had 67 yards rushing on 25 carries.
