Volleyball Falls to #11 California

TEMPE, Ariz. - Led by Cal's Angie Pressey's 25 kills, the eleventh-ranked Golden Bears topped ASU in four games Saturday night at ASU's Wells Fargo Arena. The Sun Devils were able to take the first game 24-30, and though they hung tough with Nina Reeves' 18 kills, they were unable to rally as Cal took the next three, 30-26, 30-26 and 30-27. The Sun Devils fall to 11-11 and 3-8 in Pac-10 play as Cal improves to 17-5 and 6-5.
Game one saw the Sun Devils come out blazing as they rattled off a .343 hitting percentage led by Nina Reeves with seven kills and Sydney Donahue with four digs as they rolled over the Bears 30-24 to take the lead.
The Bears came back in game two with a .432 hitting percentage and Angie Pressey's six kills with teammates Morgan Beck and Ellen Orchard trailing with five apiece and taking a 30-26 win. Cal also grabbed game three 30-26 as they pushed it to four, where the Sun Devils stepped up to rally against Cal with a .214 hitting percentage to Cal's .218, while battling back and forth for the lead throughout most of the game before Cal barely edged away to take the game 30-27 and the match.
The Sun Devils will hit the road next weekend to continue Pac-10 action as they head to LA to take on the ranked UCLA Bruins and USC Trojans next Friday and Saturday. Both games start at 8 p.m. PT.
