San Diego State Defender Nick Cardenas Named Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player Of The Week

Oct. 31, 2006

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- SAN DIEGO STATE freshman defender Nick Cardenas has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 24-30, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Cardenas, from Thornton, Colo., helped catapult the Aztecs up the Conference charts to the No. 2 spot as San Diego State swept the Bay Area schools over the weekend beating No. 6 California, 3-1, and shutting out Stanford, 1-0.

For the weekend, Cardenas tallied two goals on four shots in two games. On Friday, Cardenas got SDSU's first goal with his head off a cross from the left side. He out-jumped California goalkeeper Justin Myers and knocked the ball in the net which would have been the game-winner, but the Bears received a late penalty shot goal.

In Sunday's match-up against the Cardinal, Cardenas collided with a teammate inside Stanford's box in the 26th minute of play, cutting his head. He returned to the game with a bandage at 78:34, and less than nine minutes later, he headed in a shot off a corner kick for the game-winning goal.

Next up, San Diego State takes on UCLA, Fri., Nov. 3 at 7 p.m.

This is Cardenas' first weekly honor and the fourth all-time award for the Aztecs, three of which have come within the last six weeks.
