Stanford's Rachel Buehler Named Women's Soccer Pac-10 Player of the Week
Oct. 31, 2006
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - STANFORD senior defender Rachel Buehler has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 24-30, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Buehler provided exceptional offense and defense over the weekend, leading the Cardinal to victories over Oregon State and Oregon for Stanford's third-straight Conference sweep. On Friday night, Buehler was key to the Stanford back line that allowed Oregon State just three shots and none in the second half in a 2-0 shutout win. On Sunday, in addition to her usual stern defensive presence, Buehler scored the game-winner against the Ducks in the 64th minute with a header off a corner kick. Stanford went on to blank the Ducks, 1-0, for its 13th shutout of the season. Buehler's goal was her first of the season and the third of her career.
Stanford's win over Oregon propelled the Cardinal (6-1-1) past the Ducks (4-1-2) into second place in the Conference. The Cardinal defense ranks 20th in the nation in goals against average (.572) and is tied for 10th in shutout percentage (.68).
The 14th-ranked Cardinal concludes their regular season next weekend with a match at California on Sun., Nov. 5.
This is the second Player of the Week award for Buehler, who previously won on Oct. 4, 2005. It is the 19th all-time honor for Stanford, and the fourth this season alone.
