Cal Headed to ITA Indoor Championships
Nov. 1, 2006
DOUBLE HEADER: The California women's tennis team wraps up the fall campaign with its final two tournaments, the ITA National Indoor Championships at the Racquet Club of Columbus, in Columbus, Ohio, and the Arizona State Invitational. The championships, the second of three national tournaments for singles and doubles during the 2006-07 collegiate tennis season, run from Nov. 2-5. The ASU event takes place from Nov. 3-5. The Golden Bears, who ended last season ranked No. 13, look to have a strong finish to what has already been a very successful fall season.
CAL HEADED TO THE INDOORS: This year's edition features the most players the Bears have ever sent. Senior Zsuzsanna Fodor, junior Susie Babos and freshman Nina Henkel will compete in the top 32 singles draw. Henkel heads to Ohio fresh off her ITA Northwest Regional Championship. Babos qualified after winning the singles tournament in the All-American Championships earlier this month. Fodor received an at-large bid. In addition, Babos and Fodor will also compete in the 16-team doubles draw. The duo won the doubles title at the ITA Northwest Regional. Henkel and her partner, junior Daron Moore are currently listed as alternates for the doubles bracket.
FIRST ROUND INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP DRAWS WITH SEEDINGS:
No. 1 Susie Babos vs. Jenna Long, North Carolina
Zsuzsanna Fodor vs Blakeley Griffith, Tennessee
Nina Henkel vs. Natalie Frazier, Georgia
No. 2 Babos/Fodor vs. Lauren Macfarlane/Nicola Slater, Florida State
TERRIFIC TANDEM: The doubles team of Babos and Fodor already has two championships this fall and has a 9-1 record heading into the Indoor Championships. The duo breezed through the Cal Invitational, winning three matches in the doubles bracket by the scores of, 8-2, 8-2 and an 8-0 shutout to take the crown. Babos and Fodor later won the doubles title at the ITA Northwest Regional, with victories over Stanford pairs in both the semifinals and the finals.
HENKEL'S ON HER WAY: It has been an equally impressive fall season for freshman Nina Henkel. The winner of the ITA Northwest Regional, Henkel is starting to make a name for herself, as she currently posts a fall record of 11-2. Perhaps her most impressive win thus far was upsetting Theresa Logar of Stanford in the semifinals of the regional. Logar, the No. 1 seed in the tournament and ranked No. 3 in the ITA preseason rankings, had a 5-2 lead in the third set, but could not hold off Henkel, as she climbed back to beat Logar, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5. In the finals, Henkel knocked off another Cardinal, Jessica Nguyen, to win the singles title with a 7-5, 6-4 victory.
