Bears Fall in ITA Indoor Championships
Nov. 2, 2006
COLUMBUS, OHIO - It was a tough opening day in the ITA Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio, for the California women's tennis team. The Golden Bears dropped all four matches they competed in on Thursday at the Racquet Club of Columbus.
No. 1 seed and reigning NCAA singles champion, junior Susie Babos lost her first singles match of the fall season. The winner of the singles draw at the All-American Championships was defeated by North Carolina's Jenna Long, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
The singles loss wasn't the only one Babos suffered in the first day of the tournament. She and senior Zsuzsanna Fodor entered the doubles tournament as the No. 2 seed, but fell to Lauren Macfarlane and Nicola Slater of Florida State, 8-6. The defeat was only the second of the fall for the duo who won the doubles draw at the ITA Northwest Regional two weeks ago.
Fodor didn't have any better luck in her singles match. Blakeley Griffith of Tennessee knocked off Fodor in two sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Also losing in two sets was freshman Nina Henkel. Henkel, who won the singles draw in the ITA Northwest Regional, was defeated by Natalie Frazier of Georgia, 6-4, 6-3.
Cal will continue to compete in the championships in the consolation brackets, which start tomorrow.
