No. 24 Oregon Sweeps by Cougars
Nov. 2, 2006
EUGENE, Ore. - The Washington State volleyball team put up a tough first-game fight but couldn't stem the strong attack of No. 24 Oregon as the Ducks (17-4, 7-4) took a 34-32, 30-12, 30-22, win Thursday night at McArthur Court on the UO campus.
Oregon's Sonja Newcombe led all players with 14 kills while Neticia Enesi, Erin Little and Mira Djuric each added 10 kills. Katie Swoboda had 19 digs and Karen Waddington led the match with five blocks.
The first game was played very close with 20 ties before the Ducks took a 34-32 win on their third attempt at game point. The Cougars had two attempts to put the first game away, at 29-28, and again at 30-29, but the home-court Ducks battled back for the win.
Oregon kept the momentum from the first game win by hitting .485 in the second game for a 30-12 win. The Ducks hit .447 en route to a 30-22 third game win.
'We competed point-for-point in game one tonight against the University of Oregon and then we just broke down in a lot of different areas but mostly in our first-ball attack' Cougar Head Coach Brian Heffernan said. 'We did not pass the ball well enough to really run our offense and allowed Oregon's defense to really get into a digging rhythm against our team and score some easy points.'
WSU meets Oregon State Friday night in a 7 p.m. contest at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis.
