Sun Devils Come Out Strong in Day One of Thunderbird Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 12th Annual ASU Women's Tennis Thunderbird Tournament kicked off Friday at ASU's Whiteman Tennis Center, which saw Sabrina Capannolo, Kady Pooler and Roxanne Clarke all advance to the single's quarterfinal round after going undefeated on the day. ASU also went 3-for-4 in doubles play with wins from Sabrina Capannolo and Laila Abdala, Nadia Abdala and Rebecca Rankin and Amanda Martin and Jessica Leitch.
The tournament kicked off Friday morning with doubles action as Sabrina Capannolo and Laila Abdala teamed up to take down Michigan's Kara Delicata and Allie Shafner 8-6 while their teammates Nadia Abdala and Rebecca Rankin topped Kansas State's Vivianda Yrueta and Fernanda Da Valle 8-2. Freshman, Amanda Martin made her debut at Whiteman Tennis Center as she paired up with Jessica Leitch to top Paij Porter of Northern Arizona and Tania Mahtani of Michigan.
In singles action, ASU started off on fire as 6-of-7 Sun Devils advanced past the first round with wins from Laila Abdala, Kady Pooler, Sabrina Capannolo, Rebecca Rankin, Roxanne Clarke and Nadia Abdala.
In the round of 16, senior, Kady Pooler stepped up to top the #8 seed, Jenny Kuehn of Michigan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 as Sabrina Capannolo took a hard-fought 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 win over Pepperdine's Jillian Braverman. In the last match of the day, the three-seed, Roxanne Clarke took on Kansas State's Vivian Yrueta where she came from behind in the first set to take it 7-6(3) before closing the door on Yrueta with a 6-3 win in the second set as three Sun Devils advance to the quarterfinals.
The 12th Annual ASU Women's Tennis Thunderbird Tournament will roll on tomorrow with play starting at 8:30 a.m. with doubles, followed by the singles quarterfinals and consolation brackets at 9:30 a.m.
