Washington State Opens Exhibition Season
Nov. 3, 2006
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State men's basketball team will host Central Washington University in an exhibition match at Friel Court, Sunday, Nov. 5. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and admission is free.
First-year head coach Tony Bennett inherits a team that returns 74 percent of its scoring, 83 percent of its rebounding, 84 percent of its starts, and 77 percent of its minutes played from 2005-06.
Returning for the Cougars are junior starters Robbie Cowgill, Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver. Cowgill led the Cougars with 33 blocks last season. His 1.32 per game average ranked sixth in the Pacific-10 and placed him ninth on the Cougar single-season list.
Low, the school career leader in free throw percentage (.836), knocked down 36 percent of his 3-point shots last season. Weaver started 25 games last season and became the fourth Cougar in school history to have at least 100 rebounds (116) and 100 assists (107) in the same season.
Although this is an exhibition match, the Cougars have faced the Wildcats in regular season match-ups 26 times and boast a 23-3 record. The last meeting between the two came in 1998, which resulted in a 91-78 Cougar victory.
Central Washington is led by former Cougar Lance Ben Doer, who averaged 20.6 points last season. The Wildcats were 15-13 during the 2005-06 campaign, which ended in a NCAA Division II First Round loss to Seattle Pacific University.
WSU opens its regular season at home against Texas San Antonio, Friday, Nov. 17 at 8:30 p.m.
