Soccer's Bingham, Felts Garner District Academic Accolades
Nov. 6, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. - Kim Bingham and Kyleyn Felts, both members of the Arizona State University soccer team, have been selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII First Team, CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) announced Monday. Both Sun Devils are now candidates for Academic All-America honors that will be announced later this month.
The selections mark the second time in program history that two members of the squad have earned first team accolades in the same season, following the first team selections of Elizabeth Bogus and Manya Makoski in 2005. Bingham, a third team honoree one year ago, and Felts, a second team selection, both earned their second career honor from CoSIDA and now gives the Sun Devil program eight honorees with 13 total awards.
Bingham concluded her career in Tempe as one of the top keepers in the history of the program as she helped limit opponents to 17 goals this year, a record-low for the Sun Devils that surpassed the 23 allowed in 2003, 2001, 2000 and 1999. Individually, Bingham ranks second in career saves (264), goals against average (1.15) and shut outs (16.5) while her senior campaign saw her rank second in both shut outs (7.0) and goals against average (0.86) while her 89 saves ranked fifth in a season. Bingham also recorded the fourth-best goals against average against Pac-10 foes (1.18) while ranking fifth in fewest goals allowed in Pac-10 play (11).
Felts finished her junior season with the Sun Devils with two goals, the first of collegiate career, and one assist, also the first of her collegiate career, for five total points with both goals coming in Pac-10 play on penalty kicks. Both of her goals also were game-winners, tying for the second-most game-winners in Pac-10 play while also ranking tied for the ninth-most game-winners in a season with two. On defense, Felts helped the Sun Devils turn in seven shut outs, the third-most in school history, including a 1-0 upset of No. 10 California.
