Thompson Tabbed Pac-10 Player of the Week
Nov. 6, 2006
Walnut Creek, Calif. - Stanford senior midfielder Galen Thompson has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 31 - Nov. 5, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Thompson, of Denver, Colo., played a key role in Stanford's 2-1 upset over Bay Area rival, No. 10 California to finish out the regular season of play at Maloney Field.
Friday's match was senior day for the Cardinal, as Thompson was one of four seniors honored during the pregame ceremony. In his final regular season game, Thompson went on to score the game-winning goal at the 6:33 mark of the first overtime period to lift Stanford to a third place Conference finish.
Thompson, who fired three of his team-high four shots on goal, made a quick run up the sideline and collected a cross from junior Dan Shapiro. Moving past a defender, Thompson broke free and ripped a shot that sailed past the outstretched arms of California goalkeeper Justin Myers, a fixture in the national rankings after allowing just eight goals all year.
This is Thompson's second weekly honor and the ninth all-time award for the Cardinal.
