USC Women Open Up With 72-50 Exhibition Win
Nov. 6, 2006
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The USC women's basketball team got to get a taste of its future at the brand-new Galen Center by testing the waters in exhibition play against the Australian Institute of Sport on Monday night. Behind 22 points from Shay Murphy and double figures from freshmen Morghan Medlock and Hailey Dunham, the Trojans cruised past the visiting AIS squad on the way to a 72-50 win.
Murphy - a Wade Trophy and Wooden Award preseason candidate - wound up with a double-double for the Trojans by adding 10 rebounds to her 22-point effort. Sophomore Nadia Parker also tore down 10 rebounds for the Women of Troy in the win, as she and senior Jamie Hagiya also added nine points apiece. Eight different Trojans scored in the game, including six points and eight rebounds from freshman Aarika Hughes and two points apiece from junior Simone Jelks and senior Kristen Travers. The USC freshman tandem of Dunham, Hughes and Medlock accounted for 28 points. 18 rebounds and 11 steals, as Dunham led all players with six steals, and Hughes had a game-high five assists in the game to keep the Trojans charging past AIS.
USC was outrebounded 23-20 in the first half, but made no mistake about hitting the boards harder in the second, ripping down a grand total of 49 rebounds - including 25 offensive boards. Midway through the first half, USC generated a 9-0 scoring run to leap ahead 26-14. Minutes later, Hughes nailed a 3-pointer that gave USC its largest lead of the half at 29-18 with 5:40 to go in the half. After leading 33-26 at halftime, the Trojans got streaky again in the second half with a pair of runs to put AIS well out of reach. Medlock converted a three-point play that kept the Trojans rolling on another lengthy scoring run. A long score from Hagiya, a Medlock jumper and a Hughes assist to Parker down low pushed USC ahead 61-36 before Murphy capped off the 16-0 run with a steal and coast-to-coast layup for a 63-36 lead before AIS was able to get a score.
AIS was led in scoring on the night by Cayla Francis' 15 points, and a 12-point outing from Rebecca Schatz.
The Trojans' official home opener is coming fast. USC takes on longtime rival Long Beach State in a 7 p.m. showdown on Friday (Nov. 10), when USC also will retire the jerseys of Trojan greats Cheryl Miller and Lisa Leslie in a halftime ceremony.
