COUGAR HEAD COACH Tony Bennett: Washington State Head Coach Tony Bennett begins his first season at the helm of the Cougar program...fourth year with WSU...assistant coach in 2003-04...associate head coach in 2004-05 and 2005-06...assistant coach at Wisconsin from 2000-03.
LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON: Tony Bennett will take to the sideline as a head coach for the first time in his career at the top of the Washington State program in 2006-07...becomes the 16th man to lead the Cougars...succeeds his father Dick whose resignation took effect at the end of the 2005-06 season...younger Bennett was instrumental in signing juniors Robbie Cowgill, Derrick Low and Kyle Weaver as well as redshirt senior transfer Ivory Clark...all but Low finished the 2005-06 season ranked among Pacific-10 leaders in at least one category...Cowgill and Low were named Pacific-10 freshman honorable mention in 2004-05...Tony Bennett spent the last three seasons at WSU, including last two as associate head coach...came to Washington State from Wisconsin where he spent three seasons as an assistant coach for the Badgers.
WASHINGTON STATE AGAINST THE FIELD: The Cougars will face UAB, host Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Radford in the The John Thompson Foundation Classic at U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee, Wis., Nov. 10-12...Cougars lost 86-67 at UAB, Dec. 12, 1979 in only meeting with the Blazers...Washington State has never faced the Panthers or Highlanders.
THESE DATES IN COUGAR HISTORY (Nov. 10-12): The match-up versus the UAB Blazers (Nov.10) marks the earliest game in Cougar history...Cougars are 1-0, Nov. 11 with the only match-up coming in 1989...Kelvin Sampson's Cougars blew past Simon Fraser 90-45...freshman Bennie Seltzer and sophomore Darryl Woods recorded 20 and 18 points, respectively, while holding the Clan to a 19.6 field goal percentage...Seltzer's 20 points were the first in a season that produced 327 points, placing him fourth on the all-time list for Cougar freshman...Cougars game against Radford, will mark the first time they have played that date in school history.
LAST SEASON: Washington State finished 11-17, 4-14 in the Pacific-10...lost 66-55 to Oregon in the first round of the Pac-10 Tournament.
THE ROAD HOME: WSU Head Coach Tony Bennett, Assistant Coach Ben Johnson, Director of Player Development/Operations Mike Heideman and junior guard Kyle Weaver all hail from Wisconsin...Bennett (Green Bay) played his prep ball at Preble High and starred at Wisconsin-Green Bay...Johnson (Stevens Point) was a teammate of Bennett's at UWGB...Heideman (Appleton) earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Wisconsin-La Crosse...coached high school at Xavier in Appleton and Augusta...assistant and head coach at UWGB...head coach at St. Norbert College in De Pere...Weaver is from Beloit...lettered three years at Beloit Memorial High School...first team All-State by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel as a senior in 2003-04.
