Jensen To Represent USC At NCAA Cross Country West Regional
Nov. 7, 2006
Senior Ashley Jensen will be USC's only runner this week at the NCAA Cross Country West Regional being held in Gresham, Ore. The 6K race will take place at Blue Lake Regional Park at 11 a.m. and will be hosted by the University of Portland.
Jensen, who transfered from Providence to USC to get a communications management master's, has NCAA experience. She qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 2003 and 2005 and her Providence team finished third twice and 16th once in her three seasons of running for Providence.
'Her training is going really well right now,' said USC cross country coach Tom Walsh. 'It is sad that our season is nearing its end because she is really starting to get in a groove. The four weeks that she battled a virus really set her back.'
'We are looking for this experience to put a positive note on the end of this season and carry it on into the track season. She will be important for us in the distances.'
Jensen led USC runners at the Pac-10 Cross Country Championships and in each of their final three meets. Prior to that, USC had a different runner lead them in each race.
The Trojans had a runner qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championships in four straight seasons before being shutout last season. Jensen is USC's only hope this season and would probably need to finish in the top 20 to qualify.
It has been raining all week in Oregon and is expected to continue this weekend.
'Ashley is from Rhode Island and has run in all kinds of conditions, so this could work in her favor,' said Walsh.
