Forrest Named Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Year

Nov. 9, 2006

WALNUT CREEK, CALIF. - Washington junior forward Kevin Forrest was named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Year, while seven Huskies were named to the all-conference team, Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Thursday.

Forrest (Edmonds, Wash.) was also named to the All-Pac-10 first-team, along with senior defender Ty Harden (Junction City, Ore.) and junior forward Ely Allen (Kent, Wash.). Senior defender Matt Fischer (Sammamish, Wash.) and sophomore midfielder George John (Shoreline, Wash.) were selected to the second-team, while redshirt freshman goalkeeper Rylan Hawkins (Shoreline, Wash.) and sophomore midfielder Jo Jo Katz (Mission Viejo, Calif.) were honorable mention honorees.

Forrest led the Pac-10 all season long in every offensive category, finishing the regular season with conference highs in shots (97), shots per game (5.71), points (27), points per game (1.59), goals (13), goals per game (0.76), and gamewinning goals (eight). He also ranks nationally in goals per game (11th) and points per game (21st). Forrest was a two-time selection to the Soccer America National Team of the Week, Sept. 7 and Sept. 20, and was named Pac-10 Player of the Week, Sept. 5. His 13 goals this season are the most scored by a Husky since 1997, and his 27 points are the most since 1998. The first-team nod for Forrest is the second of his career, as he also earned that honor as a sophomore in 2004.

Harden was named to the All-Pac-10 team for the fourth-straight year, including a second-straight selection to the first-team. Harden has been the anchor of the UW defense, playing a huge role in seven shutouts this season. Harden also got into the scoring act in his final year, netting three goals - one gamewinner versus Vermont and two to force overtime in the final minutes of regulation versus UCLA and Oregon State.

Allen was selected to the All-Pac-10 team for the third straight year after a second-team nod in 2005 and an honorable mention honor in 2004. Allen was right behind Forrest in offensive production, scoring seven goals and adding five assists for 19 points. Allen was a Pac-10 Player of the Week honoree the first week of the season.

The All-Pac-10 honors for Fischer, John, Hawkins and Katz were all career-firsts. Fischer, who shares the center back duties with Harden, has not only contributed to an outstanding defense but ranks fifth on the team with seven points on three goals and one assist. John, a central midfielder, is fourth on the team with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Wide midfielder Katz has turned in a solid sophomore campaign, ranking among the top players in the conference in assists with seven. In his first season manning the net, redshirt freshman Hawkins has played beyond his years, recording six shutouts and a 0.96 goals against average.

San Diego State's Nick Cardenas was selected the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year and California's Kevin Grimes was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year.

The Huskies will host Creighton in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, Friday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field. UW finished the regular season 12-6-1 and fifth in the Pac-10 with a league record of 4-5-1.
